The Senate has unanimously passed the D.C. Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium Campus Revitalization Act, a move that shifts control of the stadium campus from federal oversight to the District of Columbia. The legislation aims to facilitate commercial and residential development while maintaining outdoor recreation spaces and park access.
House Committee on Natural Resources Chairman Bruce Westerman expressed his approval following the bill's passage. He stated, "In the final few hours of the 118th Congress, the American taxpayer scored one more win with the passage of this legislation. Now the National Park Service can focus on reducing their $23.3 billion deferred maintenance backlog instead of wasting federal tax dollars on a crumbling stadium in D.C."
Westerman acknowledged collaboration with other lawmakers in crafting this bill, adding, "I was proud to work with Chairman Comer and Delegate Holmes Norton on this meaningful legislation that is a win-win for the National Park Service and District of Columbia."
H.R. 4984 aims to transfer administrative jurisdiction over the stadium campus, removing it from federal control and easing financial burdens on taxpayers. The bill will now proceed to President Biden's desk for signing into law.
