President Donald Trump has signed an executive order aimed at enhancing forest management and modernizing wildland firefighting efforts. The order seeks to promote collaboration with state and local partners, increase efficiency in firefighting, and support innovative technologies and new markets for wood products such as biomass.

House Committee on Natural Resources Chairman Bruce Westerman (R-Ark.) expressed his support for the executive order. “Today’s executive order will help improve forest management and modernize wildland firefighting, enhancing the federal government’s ability to combat catastrophic wildfires,” Westerman stated. He emphasized the importance of collaboration between state and federal agencies, using innovative technologies, and eliminating inefficiencies as key elements of both the executive order and the bipartisan Fix Our Forests Act.

The executive order aims to restore practical approaches to wildfire suppression and forest management across local, state, and federal levels. It encourages collaboration, supports technological advancements in forest management and firefighting, and addresses inefficiencies between the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Department of the Interior. Additionally, it focuses on making utility corridors more resilient to wildland fires, supporting firefighters with fire retardant use, safety upgrades through technology, and incentivizing markets for wood products like biomass.

Many aspects of this executive order align with Chairman Westerman’s Fix Our Forests Act (FOFA), which was passed by the U.S. House of Representatives in January following significant fires in Los Angeles, California. FOFA is a comprehensive bipartisan initiative designed to restore forest health, increase resilience against catastrophic wildfires, expedite environmental analyses, reduce unnecessary lawsuits, and accelerate forest restoration projects.
