This week, the Trump administration approved the Ambler Road Project in Alaska. The 211-mile road will connect the Dalton Highway to the Ambler Mining District, an area with significant deposits of copper, gallium, germanium, and cobalt.

House Committee on Natural Resources Chairman Bruce Westerman (R-Ark.) commented on the decision: “The Ambler Road Project is the key that will unlock Alaska’s extraordinary resource potential and unleash American mineral dominance. This project will support thousands of good-paying jobs and generate revenues that will boost Alaska’s rural communities. I thank President Trump for taking action to secure American mineral supply chains and grow our economy.”

The approval reverses a 2024 decision by the Biden administration to reject the project. Supporters argue that the road will help meet Alaska’s economic needs and strengthen domestic mining, which is seen as important for U.S. national security.

The construction phase is expected to create 2,730 jobs in rural Alaska, contributing to local income and economic growth. Projections indicate that Alaska could receive over $1.1 billion from various sources related to mining activities along the route, including license taxes, corporate income taxes, production royalties, and claim rents.
