Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum has announced plans to enhance oil and gas development in the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska (NPR-A). This move is seen as a significant shift from previous policies, aligning with President Trump’s Executive Order 14153 aimed at “Unleashing Alaska’s Extraordinary Resource Potential.”

House Committee on Natural Resources Chairman Bruce Westerman (R-Ark.) expressed support for this decision. He stated, “Today’s announcement is another promise made and kept by the Trump administration. Secretary Burgum is overturning draconian rules that locked up our resources and stifled energy production in Alaska’s North Slope. By overturning these radical Biden-era rules, the Trump administration is returning to commonsense policies, supporting Alaska Native communities and unlocking the full potential of our nation’s energy resources.”

The new plan repeals restrictions imposed during the Biden administration that had limited oil and gas production in large areas of NPR-A. The Trump administration’s actions have been welcomed by Alaska Native communities following their formal announcement in Utqiagvik, Alaska.

This measure aims to provide clarity for operators engaged in crucial energy development projects within the region.
