The Subcommittee on Energy and Mineral Resources recently convened to discuss the future of U.S. offshore energy resources. The hearing focused on restoring American energy dominance, a goal emphasized by Subcommittee Chairman Pete Stauber.
Stauber stated, "For 4 years, President Biden ignored the livelihoods and energy needs of hardworking Americans by waging war on domestic energy. Fortunately, House Republicans are working with President Trump to reverse the disastrous policies of the previous administration, and we will begin by unleashing offshore oil and gas production in the Gulf of America and Alaska. By making America energy dominant once again, we will lower costs at the pump, create jobs, and enhance our national security."
The Gulf of America plays a significant role in U.S. oil production, contributing nearly 14 percent to the national total and supporting around 410,000 jobs. In Alaska, the oil and gas sector provides 69,200 jobs and $5.9 billion in wages, accounting for 16 percent of employment in the state. Over two decades, offshore oil and gas activities have generated approximately $129.87 billion in revenue.
Critics argue that the Biden administration's policies have hindered offshore exploration and production. In response, recent efforts led by President Trump aim to reverse these policies. On January 20, 2025, Trump signed Executive Order 14153 to boost Alaska's energy potential through increased offshore production.
Additionally, Secretary Doug Burgum from the Department of the Interior issued orders to revoke restrictions imposed during Biden's tenure. These measures encourage exploration on federal lands and waters.
House Republicans previously passed H.R. 1 to provide stability for domestic offshore energy production. This Congress plans to build upon those policies for sustainable solutions promoting American offshore energy development.
The hearing included testimonies from industry experts who discussed expanding offshore energy development's benefits for Americans nationwide.
