House Committee on Natural Resources Chairman Bruce Westerman and U.S. Representative Scott Peters have reintroduced the Fix Our Forests Act, aiming to address wildfire prevention and forest management. This legislative effort comes in response to recent wildfires in Los Angeles.
"As tragic wildfires rage in Los Angeles, we're working in Washington to help prevent these types of catastrophes in the future with the Fix Our Forests Act," stated Westerman. He emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach using proven science to restore forests and protect communities from wildfires.
Peters expressed his concern for Californians affected by the fires, saying, "It is hard to describe the pain Californians feel over the loss suffered in Los Angeles." He highlighted the importance of policy changes to prevent fires and limit their impact, recalling past wildfire experiences in San Diego.
The Fix Our Forests Act proposes measures such as simplifying environmental reviews for forest projects, promoting collaboration among federal, state, tribal, and local entities, and encouraging active management of infrastructure safety. The bill also aims to support wildland firefighters and their families through continuity in casualty assistance programs.
Previously passed by the House of Representatives with bipartisan support in September 2024, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise plans to bring this legislation back for consideration next week.
