U.S. President Joe Biden has announced the designation of two new national monuments in California, covering approximately one million acres, using the Antiquities Act of 1906. This decision has prompted a response from House Committee on Natural Resources Chairman Bruce Westerman (R-Ark.).

Westerman expressed his disapproval, stating: "In the waning days of his failed administration, President Biden is again bending to the demands of radical environmentalists without considering the long-term consequences of his actions." He emphasized that federal efforts should focus on issues like addressing the $35.5 billion maintenance backlog on federal lands rather than advancing what he termed an "unscientific 30x30 agenda."

He further criticized the administration's use of laws such as the Antiquities Act and expressed concern over ignoring local community voices. Westerman stated his intent to work with the 119th Congress to reverse these policies and return key management decisions to local stakeholders.

This action by the Biden administration follows a pattern observed by committee Republicans who have previously raised concerns about similar moves. They have called for improved management solutions for existing federal lands instead of adhering to what they describe as a vaguely defined initiative.

Chairman Westerman reiterated his commitment to responsible federal land management and aims to address perceived abuses of authority related to the Antiquities Act in future congressional sessions.
