Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Expanding Public Lands Outdoor Recreation Act (EXPLORE), bipartisan legislation sponsored by Congressman Bruce Westerman (AR-04) to expand outdoor recreation access nationwide.
In a statement, Congressman Westerman expressed his dedication to ensuring the reopening of overnight camping at the Albert Pike Recreation Area, stating, "No one understands the blessing of outdoor recreation opportunities quite like Arkansans, which is why I’m proud to champion the EXPLORE Act to ensure that outdoorsmen and women can safely enjoy their favorite recreation sites, like Albert Pike, for generations to come."
The Albert Pike Recreation Area, known for attracting outdoor enthusiasts, had suspended overnight camping since a tragic flash flood in 2010. Westerman's EXPLORE Act aims to address this issue by implementing various provisions, including reopening existing overnight campsites, identifying new camping areas, and establishing new campgrounds with amenities like electric and water hookups.
Apart from addressing the situation at Albert Pike, the EXPLORE Act also focuses on improving access to public lands, enhancing visitor experiences through technology, and supporting small businesses that rely on public land access. Furthermore, the legislation aims to protect activities like rock climbing, create new biking trails, restore campgrounds, and enhance infrastructure while also addressing housing shortages and outdated infrastructure in gateway communities.
Supported by over 100 outdoor organizations, including various Arkansas-based groups advocating for a range of outdoor activities, the EXPLORE Act is set to have a positive impact on outdoor recreation opportunities across the country.
