The Hempstead County Sheriff’s Office announced on March 24 that it is investigating a dog attack that occurred on March 22 at a residence on Northwest North Street in Washington, Arkansas.

According to the sheriff’s office, deputies responded to reports of an animal attack at approximately 11:17 a.m. Upon arrival, they found that a four-year-old child had suffered significant injuries from the incident. Deputies provided emergency medical aid by applying a tourniquet and bandaging to control bleeding before emergency personnel transported the child for air evacuation to Arkansas Children’s hospital for further treatment.

During their investigation, authorities determined that the dog involved was not current on its vaccinations. Deputies instructed the owner to secure the animal for mandatory quarantine and evaluation. While attempting to contain the dog, it attacked an adult at the scene as well, causing additional injuries.

Due to what officials described as an immediate threat to public safety, one deputy discharged his service weapon and killed the animal. No further injuries were reported after this action. The injured adult was taken to a local medical facility for treatment.

The deceased animal was sent to a licensed veterinary clinic for rabies testing; results are pending. The dog’s owner received a citation for violating county ordinances related to harboring or owning a vicious animal and has been given a court date.

The Hempstead County Sheriff’s Office said its investigation into this incident is ongoing.
