Congressman Bruce Westerman and Senators Tom Cotton and John Boozman have reached out to Army Secretary Dan Driscoll, seeking clarity on the future role of Pine Bluff Arsenal in the U.S. defense industrial base. They requested a detailed plan from the Army, as mandated by Congress, to address domestic munitions production issues and supply chain challenges.
The lawmakers emphasized their commitment to ensuring that “the military has the munitions it needs to fight and win decisively,” aligning with directives from President Trump. They believe Pine Bluff Arsenal is crucial in resolving the current munitions crisis.
In their communication, they highlighted concerns over potential downsizing at Pine Bluff Arsenal, which contradicts efforts to boost munitions manufacturing domestically. The letter also reminded Secretary Driscoll of legal obligations under Title 10 USC § 2687 and § 4532 regarding military installations and procurement practices.
The delegation requested specific information about planned actions at Pine Bluff Arsenal within the next three months, including any changes in staffing or production schedules. They also sought details on how proposed actions would comply with existing laws and asked for cost analysis related to potential shifts in manufacturing responsibilities away from Pine Bluff.
The letter concluded with an insistence on transparency regarding cost assumptions used by the Army, noting that evidence suggests Pine Bluff Arsenal is more economical than many commercial alternatives.
